The vaccinnet 2.0 project uses FHIR as the data standard. However, FHIR is much more than that. It is designed to exchange electronic health information between different systems. Using web-native technologies like RESTful APIs, JSON, or XML, it breaks data into modular "resources" (e.g., patient, observation, medication) for easier, faster, and more interoperable access. Moreover, it is open source, which is a pet peeve of mine.
Though I'm not an expert in FHIR, I became as independent as possible with this standard and the implementation in the public Healthcare sector in Belgium.
